Yécora/Iekora

This town is situated on a hill surrounded by vineyards and cereal crops. It is noted for its ancient
Gothic fountain, nestled in a unique space. Outside of the town centre we shall find the chapel of Sta. Mª de Bercijana, built in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The name of the icon, the choice of the place and its construction was due to the belief that the Virgin appeared to Bercijan, a shepherd from Yecora/Iekora, on a hilltop.

On August 25th, the feast in honor of the Annunciation is celebrated. The townspeople go down to the hermitage in procession, led by the local dance group.

On the Saturday before May 12th, the feast of Saint Dominic, a procession is also held to the hermitage. On that day, “la cadena” is danced and the image of the Virgin of Bercijana (14th century) is moved to the parish. The dancers wear a brightly colored overskirt over white pants and shirt with a blue sash that crosses their chest.
