Getting there
The journey is well worth your while
Rioja Alavesa is the southernmost region of the seven districts of the province of Alava, in the Basque Country. Its official name is Cuadrilla de Rioja Alavesa, and Laguardia is its regional capital. Its scant 300 square kilometres are bordered by the River Ebro to the south and the Toloño Mountains to the north.
By road
The Rioja Alavesa Wine Route enjoys excellent transport links, including the AP-68 and AP-12 motorways and an extensive local road network. The short distances and ease of access between its 23 towns, belonging to 15 municipalities and 4 administrative boards, make the region an ideal place to explore, enjoying its villages, landscapes and people.
The AP-68 motorway is one of the most important motorways in the country as it links the N-I, near Miranda de Ebro, with Zaragoza. You can also get to Logroño from Pamplona on the AP-12 motorway, and from there to the various towns in Rioja Alavesa. Madrid is 356 km away, which takes about 3 and a half hours to cover. Taking Laguardia, the region's capital, as a reference point, the distance to Vitoria is 48 km, which takes about 50 minutes. It is 111 km from Bilbao and takes 1 hour and 20 minutes. The distance from Pamplona is 101 km, and the trip takes an hour and a quarter. Finally, it is 194 km from Zaragoza and takes about two hours to get there.
By aeroplane
Logroño-Agoncillo airport is located a few kilometres from the region's border and only 33 km from Laguardia on the N232a road.
You can also fly to the airports at Vitoria, 60 km away, and Bilbao, 110 km away. The latter has the most air connections. Other nearby airports are Madrid-Barajas, 360 km away, Zaragoza, 195 km away, and Santander, 210 km away.
