How to get to Rioja Alavesa

Rioja Alavesa is one of the seven districts into which the province of Alava, in the Basque Country is divided. Its official name is Cuadrilla de Laguardia-Rioja Alavesa. The regional capital is Laguardia.

It is a region of just over 300 km2, located south of Alava and bordered on the north by the Toloño Mountain Range and to the south by the Ebro River.

The Rioja Alavesa Wine Route boasts excellent communications such as the AP-68 and AP-12 Motorways and a wide network of local roads. The short distances and the ease of access between its 23 towns, belonging to 15 municipalities and 4 Administrative Boards, make the region an ideal place to travel around, enjoying its towns, landscapes and people.

There is also a train station in Vitoria and the closest to Logroño. And if you want to come by plane, there is the airport of Logroño-Argoncillo, or Vitoria or Bilbao which has the greatest number of scheduled flights.

By road

The AP-68 motorway is one of the most important highways nationwide, since it joins the N-I, at Miranda de Ebro, to Zaragoza. You can also reach Logroño from Pamplona on the AP-12 motorway, and from there to the different towns of Rioja Alavesa. From Madrid there is a distance of 356 km which takes about 3 hours 15 minutes to travel. With Laguardia, the capital of the region as the reference point, the distance to Vitoria is 48 km, which takes about 50 minutes to travel. From Bilbao, 111 km, it takes 1 hour and 20 minutes. From Pamplona there are 101kms and it takes about an hour and a quarter or so. And there are 194 km from Zaragoza and it takes about 2 hours to arrive.

By plane

The Logroño-Argoncillo Airport is a few kilometres from the border of the region, and only 32.7 km from Laguardia, on the N232a road. The airport connects the area with some of the major Spanish cities. It is also possible to fly to the airports of Vitoria and Bilbao.
